Desi Art: Vintage bollywood posters

Thursday, May 20, 2010

As a modern day brown gal, who happens to think she has some sort of design eye (or fools herself into thinking that), I often struggle with how to carefully balance Indian decor into my aesthetic. How do I bring it into my home without it looking over the top or too tacky? I certainly don't want it to scream Indian tourist board or gift shop. No flashy twinkling lights Taj Mahal for me please (yes, I had one as a kid). One technique would be to bring in bollywood. Yep, nothing gives a better nod to your roots than a colourful vintage Indian bollywood poster. Even if you're not brown, these vintage posters are colourful, eclectic and scream drama, now who doesn't want that fun in their homes?

Bright and bold. Looks fantantic. Image via my UK sis-in-law.

Another shot of my cousin' lovely home spiced up with a splash of bollywood.

You can do a series. Bust out some of your folks vintage vinyl and you can create something like this. A fun focal point. Available on  etsy.

Unexpectedly this splash of colour works so well with the rustic chest. Image via one of my new favourite Indian blogs Frangipani Decor

I think my grandma actually saved all of my dad's records and posters. Perfect solution!

Thanks for the link! I have a friend who turned similar images into striking coasters and other little what-nots for the home. They looked really cool.
