My desi home.....need a book solution

Thursday, September 8, 2011

Sorry for the late post today. All I had on my mind was a big fat coffee from that took precedence. Yes it was delicious. Anyway, I'm looking for a creative book solution for my son's room. It needs to go in this space so I'm limited on my measurements. On the vent wall is where the room door opens up to so I have to be careful with depth of the unit too. I'm okay with both open or closed storage..but I'm sure my little guy will want immediate access. I wish I had the patience for some DIY...but I'm so lazy I would rather just go buy it somewhere. What do you guys think? Any other options for the lazy decorator?
Little D's book corner. Yes that is Gandhi on the top shelf and a Barclays bank piggy bank from my childhood. Image via me.

Good old Billy? The simple & easy option. Available at Ikea

I like the Smadal bookcase this would be fun if it was a colour. Again..I'm feeling too lazy to do any of that. Also available at Ikea.

Ooh I love how this one comes in so many colours...a bit pricey though. Available at Room & Board.
Maybe I should just stack a bunch of these? But then maybe too much 'hanging' on the wall. I feel something solid is required here.  Available at CB2.
How I love Sean Yoo's Opus Incertum Bookcase. Probably a small fortune as well. Image via here.
6 Cube bookcase from Land of Nod. Nice but a bit ho hum. Oh dear what to do?

my son was saying "i need to see them, i need to see them...i need to go play with those" as I scrolled down...

i like the idea of going tall, to the height of the door

your images aren't all coming up?

@Shannon oh no i'll try to fix it!

I would re-use the floating shelves somewhere else and go for a tall bookshelf...I like all your choices...especially the room and board one...but I think something tall and white beside the white door would look good...

I need to see the rest of the room!

We have a tall ikea bookshelf in the nursery, here:

Holds A LOT!

Do share the wall pic with whatever you have chosen after having done. BTW - white is 'IN' now :-).

What about wallpapering the back of the shelf with a punchy paper (even Home depot has some good ones for $50/roll)? It's a much easier DIY than repainting a whole bookshelf, and would add some much needed colour! If you do it before adding the shelves it's that much easier...

Tall white narrow inexpensive shelf from Ikea... I really like the wallpaper idea ( Interior Groupie).. maybe get a bunch of wood paints and hand print all over in bright colours? Maybe get black board paint on the sides and give the kid a bunch of chalk? decoupage pages from his old comics/ kidddy books on the sides ? ...
DO post pics .. when done! and have fun..!

I will go for floating shelves all up to the top. Perhaps in the same grey colour as the walls or in white. Something simple and nice.

I vote for a basic white one that the whole family can have fun painting and goofing together with :)

Hi Designwali,

I just wanted to say thank you for your kind words regarding Opus Incertum. They are not very expensive at all, actually... (around $300) My little son has 6 of them stacked up in his room for all his toys and books. He loves it and I am sure your little one will too. :)
