Date night in wine country

Tuesday, November 20, 2012

I'm not going to lie, date nights for me and R are usually at the bottom of our to do lists. I'm not proud of it but usually when we get anytime we just want to hang out at home and crash. We work stupid hours in the corporate world and I always feel like I am playing catch up with kids, crafts, housework, errands, birthdays, holidays and blogging (don't even ask me about cooking & exercising). We're working on it though. R managed to orchestrate a wine tour in the Niagara Escarpment region of Ontario a couple of weeks ago. It was an overnight trip so I was getting a little cranky about the things I needed to do to get ready for it. The usual making kid sleepover arrangements and meeting deadlines before I left.  Fortunately, as soon as we got there to our little B&B the mood shifted almost instantly. It was a bright & sunny fall day and just the two of us hanging out in Niagara countryside. We walked around vineyards, hit an antique store (a first for me) and a specialty chocolate shop. Shortly after we began our Crush on Niagara shuttled wine tour. Surprisingly my pace slowed down significantly (wine may have helped there) and we met interesting new people and learned a lot about wine. I found it amazing to see people in the wineries and giving the tours have such a passion and zest for wine. They did what they loved and it showed. A perfect date in my books. Keep it coming R.

Taking fancy photos of myself with my iphone. I had to test out my phone photo skills.

Our little room at the Harvest House B&B. Cool green bedding.

Great old chairs at our B&B.

Lovely stained glass windows in this century old home.

Pretty toile. This was our phone charger station.

The vineyard right outside our B&B. We learned a lot about the process from the owner Andrew.

A visit to a local chocolate shop. Can't remember the last time we just stopped driving to have a peak into a store. Yummy treats for the kids.

Then we stopped at an antique store because I've never actually done that. It was fun seeing old things in a new light. Loved how these spools of wool looked in this crate.

First on our stop, Flat Rock Cellars. Gorgeous modern winery where with a terrific view of the escarpment and lake.
I discovered I like Riesling here.

It had absolutely stunning beams.

Also loads of oak barrels for wine storage.

Now I know what to do with all my corks...drink much?

Calamus Estate winery was our third stop and it really felt like as soon as we stepped in we were going back in time. Wonderful old barn with its own rooftop telescope.

Did I mention the wine tasting part was fun?

Last on our stop was Vineland Estates and Winery. This space was beautiful and I could see people getting married in this venue.
All in all, a perfect afternoon and I highly recommend it to any of you living in Ontario. There are loads of gems in our province that I really need to explore more. All images via me and my fancy iphone.

What a fun date idea! There are a few vineyards in Michigan that I've been wanting to go to and these pics put it back on the map for me :)
Isn’t That Charming.
