If I didn't have crazy work demands this week I would have been joining the super chic at tonight's IDS 12 opening party. All of Toronto's design savvy will be schmoozing and enjoying the Cherish Auction where 20 iconic chairs will be re-imagined by creative designers and auctioned off in support of OnexOne non-profit, there will be fabulous speakers, great music spun by design guru Karim Rashad himself, and of course a glorious after party at The Thompson Hotel. Wow, thinking about it just made me tired. I also may have made an appearance at the launch party for masalamomma.com out at yorkville. So many parties...of course I would have to get glammed up first and in these few spaces I could easily do that..

At the end of this week I'm actually stepping out of my shell (well, from behind my computer screen anyway) and attending Blogpodium at the Interior Design Show and schmoozing with glamorous blogger types at the Canadian Bloggers Event on Saturday evening. I'm pretty excited and bizarrely enough a little nervous. I mean I'm struggling with the usual insecurities, what am I going to wear and can I lose 10lbs by Friday sort of thing. I suppose the biggest thing is will I contribute something valuable to the conservation? In my mind these events are about bridging the gap between Industry and the everyday folks. Bringing design closer. Alright, I'll stop getting all deep on ya... whatever happens, I hope to meet the lovely faces behind the great blogs I read each day. Fingers crossed people don't get don't get too disappointed with me either. I'm counting on a little awesomeness to shine through. I'm looking forward to it all. In the mean time, I will psych myself up by staring at my new ipad case. Thanks to my fabulous cousin R who had to traipse around London town to find me my little Ted Baker treat! R you are the best. This ipad case is gorgeous. So I'm hoping this baby gives me the confidence I need to get through a difficult week at work and more importantly, rock it at the Blogpodium and Canadian Blogger event. Happy Chinese New Year folks. I'm anxiously awaiting my friend J to send me her hard core Chinese new year calendar horoscope thingy. I love getting every year...get all psyched reading what is in store for me for the year ahead...what to watch for and what awesome feng shui I need to conduct to ward off any negativity. First week is awesome...and then I usually I just forget about it. Nevertheless...it is hands down my favourite part of Chinese New Year. Last month I was lucky enough to win a lovely gold brushed bowl from Harabu House thanks to Will from Bright Bazaar. It is a beautiful little piece that always catches my eye everytime I walk by. So now I'm kinda obsessed with little gold bowls and have a big urge to buy a truckload of them and scatter them everywhere (no, not really...well maybe). I'm speaking about braids that is. I mastered learning how to do the waterfall braid on my daughter K this weekend and well, I'm stoked. I don't usually have skills in this area and really wanted to learn so K could rock it at a 1 year old birthday party this past Saturday. With the power of you tube and my mom actually showing me (slow instruction was required)...we had a successful braiding tutorial session. My mom always did braids on us when we were little (the ones with ribbons and double loops..classic Indian style). I did this one all by myself. Sure, I have no idea how to do it on my own head but K loved it and the best part was she was so proud of me. Score for my mommy self this weekend. Alright Monday...bring it. This mom is on fire.

Top 10 updates for my house that I may or may not get to in 2012....

I figure if I write it down (well take some pictures anyway) I actually might get some of these things done this year....so I will humour myself and see what happens. Here are a few things that need work around here (some of which my husband knows about or is just reading about for the first time now). Sure I have 56 million other resolutions, budgetary restraints and big holiday plans for 2012...but I believe if you write it down...it will come. Universe let's make it happen.

1. That carpet's got to go yo.

Picked up this damask piece 7 years ago as a temp fix. It is too small and I want something calmer. Something like this (but way cheaper). Anybody got some suggestions?

2. I need to replace these builder lights in my kitchen.

So boring and blah. Why are builders allowed to do this? I want these and I think I posted about it 2 years ago. I have not forgotten them...so that means I still love them.

3. Goodbye boobie light.

Okay the popcorn ceiling has got to go to but that is not happening while we live here. So in the meantime I need to change it up, but to what I wonder? hmmm. Help.

4. Oh bedroom, how I have neglected you.

I'm embarassed to show you this but it has to be done. It's like ripping off a band aid. Where do I begin? We desperately need lamps, some art, new bedding and a chair or something. Currently husband is threatening to run to Walmart to buy some ghetto lamps because he can't take the lack of light anymore (sure its been 7 years but who is counting now?). This has become an emergency design situation.

5. Another sad grey room. Can I say prime makeover canidate?

This room would commit suicide if it could. I need to help it badly. The layout is terrible and somehow I need to make this a functioning office and a spare bedroom for all our random relatives who stop by.

6. D's bookshelf has to happen.

R & I are still debating over tall vs short bookcase (I want tall by the way).

7. My MFAMB orginal needs a wall .... like NOW.

Words can't describe how much I love this custom piece by Jenny from MFAMB. I told her to think bollywood and sent her some Indian bhangra music to get into the groove with. This baby needs a frame I think. I know..it looks sexy just sitting on the floor. Hmm, I was thinking of using it as my jumping off point for my bedroom revamp?

8. Foyer mirror needs an update.

Mirror needs to change to somthing like this and while we are at it let's change the plant too because it attacks me when I walk by and apparently spikey plants are a no no for good feng shui.

9. DIY these lamps that I have had for over 3 years in my basement.

I have never ever DIY'ed anything...but I gotta try right? Some polish, a little wiring and lovely black shades? Too ambitious maybe? These babies are over 20 years old I think.

10. Do something something to this blank canvas that I also have had in my basement for 3 years.

Wow when you post it up like this there seems a lot for me to do. Gulp. I guess I will just keep my fingers crosssed and hope for a productive 2012. So share your tips, advice, design greatness and sure I'll even take the teasing...bring it people.

I love organizing my jewellery. You know hanging up necklaces so you can actually see them and placing earrings just so. Its a great feeling to have all your baubles in the right place. For me when I can actually see what I have, I wear it more. The best part? Making room for new little gems to add to my collection. Hello folks. Back to the grind for me today and boy oh boy, do I have a tough month ahead. Loads of deadlines and meetings and even more deadlines and more meetings. Good stuff. Not to mention that I have a sleugh of items filling up my personal to do list, you know, resolutions to restart (ahem, treadmill), new life goals to set and a general desire to shake things up a bit. Its January so to me it comes with the territory. First things first. Killer week requires some major pretty. Looking at pretty shiny things that I really really want takes me to my happy place. And I need to stay in my happy place if I want to get work done and not eat anyone alive this week.

I did have posts lined up to chat about my 2012 home resolutions but I am still shaken and very saddened with my friend's recent tragedy that all of that will just have to wait until next week. I can't stop thinking about my own relationship with my mother and how invaulable it is. My mother is my everything. She was my first love and still one of my only true loves. As a mother myself, I only hope it is the same for my children. So for the next few days a tribute to mothers everywhere. A perfect way to start is with Houston artist Jennifer Zett's art on her Etsy shop called The Little Illustrator...I have adored her work for a while now and feel especially connected to it this week.

It's been 2 years that I've been blogging away at Designwali. What better way to start a new year than by saying thanks to all my fabulous readers. This blog has been a creative ride for me and the best part of it all is feeling connected with many of you, sharing in ideas, stories and experiences. I know the blogging world makes my world a little more colourful and for that I am thankful. So what will the next year be for Designwali? Not entirely sure, I know I feel like its time to shake things up a bit and step it up a notch - whatever that means. I'm sure I'll figure it out. Time off rocks doesn't it? I have been enjoying it a little too much so I decided to get serious today. Start my resolutions early...especially the 'excercise more' one. I have no excuse really, I have some equipment collecting dust in my basement so it should be easy to just run downstairs and get fit right? It took me 3 days to get into the idea of exercising again and another 45 minutes this morning to motivate myself to put on my gear. Baby steps. Success in the end, but boy was it slow. I'm kicking myself for stopping 3 months ago...starting again blows. Now for the hard part, how do I get myself to do it again tomorrow?

My little gym. Look how smug my exercise equipment is standing there. Seriously, its like they are calling me names.

I have thought of adding mirrors into my gym - you know to motivate/ scare me more, but the space soon got filled with the kids kitchen/ slide area. Yes, I staged the kid's kitchen. See how strategically the kitchen gloves are placed? All images via me.

TGIF. Friday could not come soon enough for me. I had a killer week at work, last minute running around and a new little family member. I'm looking forward to spending a lovely weekend with my family and opening prezzies with my kids on Christmas morning. Nursery moodboard...I need help

So I quickly pulled together a little moodboard for my new niece. There are some 'gotta live with it because we are not paying for new stuff now' kind of things I need to work around, but hey its a start. Anyway, wall colour is BM Raindance (a light greeny, bluey grey colour). The crib and grey glider stay. Same goes with the double bed which needs to accomodate much needed new mommy sleep. So I have already got the Cozamia Night Peonies print (can I say its GORGEOUS) and ordered Jen Ramo's LOVE prints (ahem, one for myself too). But it feels like something is missing? I can't quite place it. Come on you design savvy readers....what do I need to do to give it that extra 'something something'? A 5lb cutie is waiting for it.

I love decorating little girls room. Don't get me wrong, my son has a cute room (well, poor kid still has to live with a baby mural..but that's another story). But there is something about a little girls room that is SO much fun to decorate. What better inspiration than my new niece? I mean this little one is going to have to take big bro's old room...which is a whole lot of light blue green going on right now (which my sister refuses to paint over...sounds familiar). I know what you must be thinking, isn't the room already ready? Nope...Indian grandmothers (well ours anyway) usually kibosh the whole pre-baby decorating on the count of superstition and all that fun stuff. So we tend to decorate post baby's arrival...and of course we just use that as an excuse to procrastinate. So now that little baby D has made her debut...let the decorating begin. Let's start with some inspiration and the improvising can come later.

How many days until Christmas? I can't keep up really. Not too sure if I'll wrap up all of my work before the holidays or if I even will finish my shopping on time. Even with all the gift guides out in blog land I still can't seem to figure out what to get R. The man never 'wants' anything (I know..what the ???). It doesn't help that he is little anti-Christmas and well, frankly our family Ebenezer. Ya, bah humbug...no Santa...the whole nine yards. But ever since our kids came along he obligingly stays 'mum' on his opinions and neither supports or reputes Santa's existence (a very smart daddy). So therein lies my dilemma. What do you get someone who you have known forever, and is kinda awesome but is a Christmas skeptic. I suppose it doesn't help that when I actually start looking for him I get seriously sidetracked and convince myself that he really would like a new chair, or a new piece of art or that killer Hermes ~~bracelet~~ belt (ahem, belt, yes belt for him of course).

Alright, I know who am I kidding? At every toy commercial my son reminds us how he wants and needs that toy. But there is no harm in imagining that my kids would wake up on Christmas morning and say, "mom, thank you so much for the awesome decorative home accesories!" I'm even cracking myself up while I'm typing this. Anyway, look for yourself, wouldn't these pillows and poufs look great in any kids room?

I just had to post this picture of my friend M & G's lovely Toronto home. They have been living with a long blank wall for a while so when G spotted this beauty at Restoration Hardware he knew he had to have it. Nice work G...nice work. I think you hit a design home run with this vintage architect's canoe model or "marquette"as I just found out. I love the scale and weight of the piece and it screams Oh Canada...which always makes me happy.

As our friends down south are giving thanks today, I am also thankful for the brains behind this fabulous book series that my family enjoys. The team from Gnaana were sweet enough to send me these fantastic Bindi Baby books which are not only beautifully illustrated but are written in Punjabi (in 6 other languages too! ) As a desi mom I find it really tough to find any good books or products out there where my kids can see their culture and language reflected in a positive and modern light. So companies like Gnaana and their products give me hope that little ones can see their cultures refelcted in literature just like everyone else. Inspiring. So you desi moms out there, the holidays are fast approaching and I can guarantee you that these would make perfect gifts under the tree. My friend's G & M just finished refacing their midcentury home kitchen and now need some ideas for their kitchen window treatment. Should they go shutter, blinds or roman? I'm think a clean lined roman shade with some pattern and colour. Perfect opportunity to add some punch into a neutral kitchen So readers what do you suggest?

Monday Must Have...

I'm starting the week right. This weekend I managed to actually recharge my batteries...amazing what 8 hours of solid sleep does for you. I even surprised myself by getting my personal photos ogranized in photobooks (seriously this was on the bottom of my to do list!). Best of all I enjoyed a glorious afternoon with a wonderful group of ladies who I'm so greatful to call my friends. Now I'm ready to tackle my lists and get things done. One of which includes getting some MUST have Christmas tree oranments.

If I wasn't working right now...I would be at Ikea with these in my hands. I NEED THESE. What if they run out? (oh great...now the paranoia begins). If they don't scream Designwali...not sure what does? Oh dear how soon can I get these in my hands...blasted busy Monday. Yrsno Hanging decorating available at Ikea.

Friday feels good today. I think its all this anticipation I have for doing nothing this weekend (sure I have a laundry list of to do's but I'm being a badass and ignoring them all). Looking forward to just chillin out, catching a movie with the kids, brunching with my girls and of course listening to some good tunes. Seriously is it 5pm yet? I could easily begin my weekend right now in a space like this. Monday Must Have...

I should listen to my kids more often. They declared jammie day on Sunday and I followed suit. I'm so happy I did. Nothing beats hanging out in your pjs all day long just relaxing with your family and putting your to do lists aside. So simple but perfect. I managed to catch up on some blog reading, thought about excercizing, surfed the net and caught up on some tv watching. I managed to even spot some lovely bedding bedding that would work well on any jammie day.

In remembrance...

As I was driving my 6 year old home from school she was busy explaining to me about what she learned in school about remembrance day. She spoke about poppies and the importance of remembering soliders who have helped us. I found myself telling her that her great, great, great grandfather was a solider who protected people a long time ago. She simply said 'wow'. In that moment I was taken aback. I had no idea sharing some family history with my 6 year old would be so moving and so 'wow'. I hope today everyone spends a moment remembering and to say simply 'wow' for all those who continue to help us. Happy Friday folks.

My desi home...K's room is almost kinda sorta done...okay maybe not

Can I just say I'm glad that I have no more wedding posts for this year. Sure they were fun...but I am 'weddinged out'. So back to decor talk. It occured to me the other day that I forgot to show you what my daughter's room looks like now after my little wallpaper nightmare a few months ago here & here. In all honesty I added a few things here & there and then it just all fizzled. Still not quite done. I need a new desk chair (Ghost chair would be my pick), definitely a new lamp, new dresser knobs and maybe another pillow or something. Maybe more art? Hmmm can't quite nail it (or maybe I'm just too lazy). She likes it a lot and on most days keeps her room (and disney princesses) all organized and neat. Not bad for a 6 year old if you ask me. Although she does rotate her teddy bears, displays trinkets now & again and often sticks her art on the wall to make it more pretty. Jeez...sounds a little too familiar doesn't it?

Its good to take a picture of your room...gets you thinking again.

What a whirlwhind of wedding madness. The last few days has been a crazy swirl of bindis, sarees, henna, colour, bangles, dancing, hosting, eating, crazy kids and pure desi glamour. My SIL C is happily married to her lovely groom R and are off celebrating wedded bliss. Me? I'm so dang tired I can barely move. It was a remarkbly beautiful November day and the wedding went off without a hitch. The bride was stunning and the groom was dashing...and I'm pretty confident that I cleaned up nicely too. It was wonderful to spend time with family you don't see to often. Lots of laughs and good times. My kids now miss their cousins and I'm left here sorting through about 2000 pictures...yikes. Here'a a little peak of what my last few days looked like...

No, not me...but my sister in law is. Which means I will be out of commission for the next few days playing hostess, decorator, family photographer and getting all glammed up (the fun part for me) for the all the festivities. ...and donned some bunny ears and somehow danced a night away with more bunnies, superheros and some pirates. Yes, the weekend turned out much wilder than I anticipated. I'm a little boosted that this mom of two easily held her own with the young ones that night. Yes, now my body aches as a result. Sigh, time to look at something pretty.

Diwali Sparkles...

Tonight we will celebrate Diwali (Deepawali...the festival of lights) with some sweet jalebis, pretty tea lights and of course, loads of sparklers. Twinkling lights & sharing sweets with loved ones...my kind of celebration. Happy Diwali everyone!

K & I started the celebration a little early and went nuts with our sparklers! (Ahem, that is an attempt at a heart).

I should play with sparklers more. I totally forgot how much fun they were! Thank goodness for you tube which helped me figure out how to take these pictures.

My sister in law C is getting married in less than 2 weeks so we are all in pre wedding mode right now.We kicked off the festivities this past weekend with a bridal shower hosted by myself and sisters S, R & S. I was inspired by Amy Atlas's design here and of course, a touch of blue for good measure. The event was a hit with lots of laughs, tears of joy and a very happy bride. A great beginning wouldn't you agree C?

Okay so I have been obessesed with these balloons. Seriously, couldn't find them ANYWHERE. No local party store carreid this size.Lucky me found this killer balloon website (Bargain Ballons). Ordered online & got them the next day (now that is GREAT service). I ordered coloured ones for my kids (you know, in case I need random balloon props for an emergency photo shoot or something).

So I ordered hydrangeas from my local florist and popped them into some blue bags and of course labelled them with the bride's name. They looked terrific in a sea of blue.

Our perfect little giveaways that we ordered from Amber courtesty of her shop on Etsy. These little blue boxes were filled with yummy candy ring pops and were a hit with all the ladies. Everyone loves getting a little blue box.

We didn't forget the sparkle (from Dollarama).

Sadly no glamorous model shots from me...but I had to share my shift dress from Asos.com. I adored wearing this dress because it had such great texture. I didn't even mind that R told me I looked like a giant doily. My earrings were from Regina at NYLightmetals...I felt so pretty wearing them! In fact, Regina is celebrating a grand opening of her new website and is offereing 15% on all her accessories for the first week (Just type: Special15 at checkout.). Yes, I know...too tempting eh? Believe it or not but I have another big fat Indian wedding coming up. Yep, R's little sis is getting married and in a few weeks the festivities start. Should be fun. Nothing beats getting glammed up in your Indian gear and dancing the night away. I could easily put on these outfits and dance around in these rooms.

Last weekend my sis & I dressed up our kiddies and hauled our little brood to our local pumpkin patch. We rummaged amongst the pumpkins, took a gazillion pictures and bought some delicious fudge. We managed to pick up some smaller pumpkins and the kids went all crazy Martha Stewart glitter on them. Happy kids and happy mommies. The power of glitter.

I'm hoping we have some nice bright weather here as I plan to take the kiddies to a local pumpkin patch. Nothing beats a lovely relaxing long weekend and mine was no exception. We had a great thanksgiving weekend with some Indan takeout and a whole bunch of family bonding, closet organizing and some pre-wedding shopping. Yes, I have another big family wedding coming up. I even had some time this weekend to find some new art and I spotted these fantastic abstract pieces by Linda Donahue and well, gotta share right? Hope you all have a good week.

Is it really bad that I don't have any big Thanksgiving plans this weekend? We do our turkey thing at Christmas..so this weekend is usually quiet and just for 'hanging out' and 'catching up'. Hanging out with each other, our family of course and if we're lucky, some tasty thanksgiving Indian take out. Sounds like a pretty good tradition to me. Happy Friday folks.

No house talk today because I'm squealing with delight after receiving my new little gold disc necklace from Sheela over at Jeweled Essentials. I'm usually pretty skeptical about ordering things online (ahem, a recent Rachel Roy dress disaster is stinging me big time). Anyway, I'm a touch & feel and trying on kind of gal so I was absolutely thrilled when my little custom pieces looked even better in person. It was the first time Sheela worked in this medium and she did a spectacular job. Wearing these little discs make me so happy! Thanks Sheela for doing such a great job!

I'm no big shot but thanks to India Today magazine my little desi home was actually featured in their September Diwali blogger special alongside some uber talented Indian bloggers. Seriously people, these ladies (Priya from Once Upon a Tea Time, Bhavna from An Indian Summer and Chandan from Girl About Home) are the true Indian design blogger big shots so I am thrilled to bits that I was even considered to be a part of that company. I'm seriously boosted that my living room is actually featured in a magazine...okay it is on the other side of the world..but still (my family in India has already been notified to buy multiple copies!) it has taken me to a happy place. One day when I build my dream home that too will be featured in some hot shot mag (oh...ego gone to my head already?) but in the meantime I look forward to getting my hardcopy and flipping through it and stumbling across my little home.

I'm not going to lie, I love the fall. We kicked it off this past weekend when my friend S called us to join her on her trip to the local fall fair. Seriously, what would I do without mommy friends who organize it all and I just bring my little brood along. Thanks S! It was a perfect day with the little ones and well, I equally enjoyed the cotton candy & ferris wheel (or as my son D calls it..the steering wheel).

Last week I got a label maker. I have always wanted one... you know to get that 'super organized' feeling when you randomly label things. Combine that with great looking little jars I spotted at a local dollar store and BAM....you get a reorganized pantry space. Yep all these organized and freshly lablled jars make me smile...seriously, I randomly walk by and open the kitchen cupboard and marvel for a few seconds...

A week of changes...

September is always a month of changes. Our little family has had so many changes this week with new classes, teachers, caregivers, diets, schedules and routines all put to the test. Thankfully we have all survived smiling and will enjoy the weekend together just relaxing. Maybe I'll hit a Homesense or Indigo to give me a quick design fix. My desi home.....need a book solution

Sorry for the late post today. All I had on my mind was a big fat coffee from Starbucks...so that took precedence. Yes it was delicious. Anyway, I'm looking for a creative book solution for my son's room. It needs to go in this space so I'm limited on my measurements. On the vent wall is where the room door opens up to so I have to be careful with depth of the unit too. I'm okay with both open or closed storage..but I'm sure my little guy will want immediate access. I wish I had the patience for some DIY...but I'm so lazy I would rather just go buy it somewhere. What do you guys think? Any other options for the lazy decorator?
